With the death of David Stuart Davies a beacon light has gone out. He was a teacher by profession and a mentor by nature, as I have been lucky enough to know personally. If I have ever achieved anything in the strange and fascinating world of Sherlock Holmes, and crime and mystery fiction, I have David to thank for his early guidance and constant encouragement. Through his books and plays he enchanted and entertained a worldwide audience. He was a wonderful, witty, warm and wise man, who will be greatly missed and his memory cherished. The world was enriched by his presence, and we are all the poorer for his passing. Requiescat in Pace, my friend, my teacher.

I knew David from when he was a teenager and I was a small boy. He was funny even then and remarkably kind and tolerant. David provided endless humour and stimulating conversation on innumerable occasions in our adult years, and was a constant friend to my parents. My mother and David were cousins with a strong bond of affection, and she was tremendously proud of his many and varied achievements. I watched - with increasing admiration- David’s remarkable progression from photographers assistant through university to teaching and on to a fantastic and varied career as a writer. That required talent, motivation, hard work and courage. A life very well lived. Love to Kathryn whose loss is of course so so much greater than anyone’s.
